Root Canal Therapy

Root canal treatment (also called Endodontics) is needed when the blood supply or nerve supply to the tooth is infected, usually by tooth decay or injury. If the pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth which may eventually lead to an abscess. If root canal treatment (RCT) is not carried out the infection will spread and the tooth will eventually need to be taken out.

The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure and most courses will involve two or more visits to your dentist.

At Pearl Dental we have invested in the latest WaveOne root canal system that is now regarded as the best system to carry out all endodontic procedures. This system is the most advanced way of carrying out root canal treatment in that usually one reciprocating nickel–titanium file is needed which is able to clean and shape root canals. We also use an endosonic scaler to disinfect the canal system, this is most important during treatment.

We would always recommend a root canal treatment where possible to save the tooth however in certain circumstances it may be necessary to have the tooth extracted and to consider other treatments options such as an implant. Usually after root canal treatment the tooth will require an onlay or crown, your dentist will discuss this with you.

In the past a root filled tooth would often darken after treatment. If there is discolouration there are several treatments available to restore the natural appearance if a crown is not suitable option.
